Sport touring on the Honda CB900F

Page 1 Page 2 Page 3

Of all the new streetbikes introduced into America this year, Honda’s CB900F has been looked forward to with the greatest anticipation. Like every other would-be corner carver, I’ve been patiently waiting to sample this thoroughbred since the first CB900FZ was debuted in Europe some two years ago. And like many, I’ve been questioning why it took Honda two years to get it here.

Consequently, when a friend called me one night inviting me to tag along with him and another friend on a nine-day roadride, the 900F came to mind immediately as the bike for the job. The itinerary had us leaving from Los Angeles, traveling the long 390-mile-stretch to Phoenix, Arizona, on to Santa Fe, New Mexico, up over the beautiful twisting roads of the Colorado Rockies, and then slicing back through Utah and around the Grand Canyon on the return trip. It sounded like Paradise Island for the both of us. And the fact that one of the accompanying bikes would be a 1980 CB750F wouldprovide an excellent opportunity to compare the 900’s personality with its smaller brother.

In appearance, it’s fairly natural to think of the 900F as simply a big-bore 750. True, these two do have a lot in common: Both utilize the same 5.3 gallon tank and plastic body pieces; both share the same basic frame (which has tapered steering head bearings and needle bearings in the swingarm pivot) and steering geometry; both use the same common brakes, and both have Comstar wheels mated to tubeless tires. But from that point on, the 900 holds little in common with the 750.

The 900’s frame features extra gusseting and heavier wall tubing in vital areas for increased strength. This is one of the contributing factors that has the 900 weighing in at a rather hefty 579 pounds wet — that’s approximately 25 pounds heavier than the 750. Some of that extra bulk can also be attributed to the 900’s oil cooler and beefy 39mm air-assisted front forks; these forks are 2mm bigger than those used on the European vision and 4mm larger than those on the 750F.

There’s several other improvements on the Americanized 900F that aren’t found on the overseas model. Our bike features a wider 2.5-inch rear wheel to enable fitting the larger tires for superbike racing. The engine is painted flat black rather than stripped clean. The engine itself is also rubber-mounted to the frame, whereas the European is not. And our bike is fitted with more sophisticated reservoir- equipped rear shocks. Honda did, however, opt to leave off the European-style low bars and rearsets, but you can purchase these as an accessory package from Honda. I have tried these units and personally don’t care for the setup because on long hauls it causes way too much wrist and arm fatigue.

Since the 900’s engine looks to be a spitting image of the 750, it’s easy to assume that the 900 simply has bigger holes. That’s not entirely true. When Honda first started formulating this DOHG design, they originally intended it to be a T50 or a 900, so this engine is not simply a stretched-out 750. The 900 features all of Honda’s latest cylinder head technology such as their Rentroof combustion chamber and four-valve-per-cylinder valvetrain. The larger 902cc displacement comes from a 2.5mm bigger bore and a 7mm longer stroke. Aside from the obvious differences in exhaust pipes and drivetrains, the 900F’s engine is virtually the same as that used in the CB900 Custom.
